Trek 520 tika ieviests 1983. gadā kā daļa no Trek 500 sērijas tūrisma velosipēdu līnijas. The Trek 520 is DISCONTINUED. New models are only available as remaining stock. Consider used market or alternative touring bikes (Surly Disc Trucker, Kona Sutra).

If buying a used 2020-2023 model, carefully inspect the seat tube area for cracks, especially near the top tube junction. Persistent creaking can be a warning sign of imminent frame failure.

Pre-2018 models have an all-steel fork, which touring purists prefer for worldwide repairability. Post-2018 models have an alloy fork — lighter but less traditional.

The 520 Grando is the more versatile choice for mixed terrain — lighter weight, wider tires, modern 2x gearing. Standard 520 better for pure loaded touring with the triple crankset's ultra-low gears.

Weight limit is 125 kg total (bike + rider + cargo). A 14 kg bike + 20 kg of panniers leaves only 91 kg for the rider. Plan accordingly.
