Hawk

01

Origin

The Hawk was one of Ampler's first two production models (alongside the Stellar) when the company launched in 2014-2016 — a single-speed e-commuter with a carbon racing fork, a hidden battery, and a stealth motor compact enough to be mistaken for a gear hub. It established the visual grammar that every later Ampler followed: an e-bike that looks like a normal bicycle from across the street. The 13.9 kg weight made it one of the lightest e-bikes in the world at the time, and the bike got Ampler onto Wired, Wallpaper and the Designboom front pages, which mattered for a small Tallinn startup trying to be taken seriously next to Bosch-powered German brands. The Hawk was phased out around 2017-2018 when the Curt absorbed and refined its single-speed concept. Surviving Hawks still appear on the Baltic second-hand market and are coveted by collectors who remember the early Ampler aesthetic.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptionally light for an e-bike (13.9 kg) — easy to carry up stairs and lively, road-bike-like to ride
  • Stealth design: integrated battery/motor and no display make it look like a normal single-speed bicycle, low theft profile
  • Maintenance-light single-speed drivetrain (chain or optional belt) with sealed, torque-sensing bottom bracket
  • Smartphone app gives genuine control — adjustable motor power, assist level and max speed (up to 35 km/h), plus firmware updates and trip tracking
  • Natural, torque-sensor-based assist that responds to pedalling force for a smooth, intuitive feel
Weaknesses
  • Single-speed only — struggles on steep hills and limits cadence range above the 25 km/h assist cutoff
  • Integrated 280 Wh battery is NOT removable, so you must park near an outlet or bring the bike indoors to charge
  • Modest 280 Wh capacity / 35–85 km range, on the low side for longer or hilly commutes
  • No on-bike display and full reliance on the phone app for any real configuration or diagnostics
  • Rigid carbon fork and 35 mm tyres give a fairly firm ride; discontinued model means spare-parts and proprietary-electronics support are now limited
