Origin

Fourstroke is BMC's full-suspension cross-country race platform, in production since around 2011 and continuously refined for World Cup XCO. It carried Tom Pidcock to Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 and Jordan Sarrou to World Cup wins. The 2023 redesign introduced the signature Autodrop integrated dropper post, and the lineup later split into the 100 mm Fourstroke 01 and the longer-travel 120 mm Fourstroke R 01 for modern down-country XC tracks.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Outstanding pedaling efficiency and anti-bob climbing thanks to the APS dual-link suspension
  • Modern, confident progressive geometry — descends far better than typical 100 mm XC bikes
  • Clean, fully integrated Autodrop dropper post is a genuine race advantage and tidies the frame
  • Very light at the flagship level (~11 kg) with top-tier wireless XX SL build
Weaknesses
  • Stock tires (Vittoria Barzo/Mezcal) criticized as nervous/skittery — many reviewers swap them
  • Autodrop's intermediate 60 mm position is fiddly and hard to locate reliably vs a 'proper' dropper
  • Integrated/proprietary Autodrop and ICS cockpit limit serviceability and parts compatibility
  • Only a single internal bottle boss — limited bottle/storage capacity
  • Flagship pricing is very high (Fourstroke R 01 up to ~€13,000 / CHF 12,999)
