Origin

BMC, a Swiss brand from Grenchen, launched the Roadmachine in 2016 as a disc-only endurance road bike pitched as the 'One Bike Collection' — a single bike meant to do everything well, from all-day epics to spirited group rides. It arrived four years after BMC's category-defining Granfondo and quickly became one of the most influential (and copied) endurance designs on the market. The 3rd generation, launched in 2024, pushed tire clearance to 40 mm, added down-tube storage and an integrated rear light, and made the rear end notably more compliant.

Specifications

Frame
Carbon. Top-tier 'BMC 01 Premium Carbon' (frame ~963 g, size 54, lightest paint) or the more affordable standard Roadmachine carbon (~1150 g). Built around BMC's Tuned Compliance Concept (TCC Endurance) with kinked/curved narrow seatstays; 3rd-gen frame ~27% more compliant in the rear triangle than the previous version.

Build-dependent across the range: Shimano 105 (mechanical/Di2), Ultegra Di2, Dura-Ace Di2, SRAM Force eTap AXS / Rival eTap AXS. Example: Roadmachine 01 Three = SRAM Force AXS 2x12, 46/33T crank, 10-36T cassette, single-sided power meter included.
Brakes
Hydraulic disc brakes on all models (disc-only platform since launch). Example 01 Three: SRAM Force AXS hydraulic disc, 160 mm rotors front and rear.
Wheels
Carbon or alloy depending on build: BMC CRD / XRD carbon (e.g. CRD-321 SL, 35 mm depth, 21 mm internal, tubeless, ~1580 g), DT Swiss ERC 1100, or Mavic on lower trims. Tubeless-ready.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Excellent balance of endurance comfort and near-race-bike efficiency — stiff where you put power down, compliant where it matters
  • Very versatile: up to 40 mm tire clearance, mudguard mounts, integrated down-tube storage and rear light
  • Neutral, predictable, confidence-inspiring handling well suited to long rides
  • Clean integrated design with fully internal routing and high-quality carbon layup that damps road buzz
Weaknesses
  • Tall front end and endurance geometry limit an aggressive aero tuck and quick steering vs pure race bikes
  • Front derailleur on 2x builds limits real tire clearance to ~36 mm despite the 40 mm frame spec
  • 3rd-gen frame is slightly heavier than the previous generation (compliance prioritised over outright weight)
  • Premium, especially 01 builds — priced comparably to rivals offering similar performance
  • Stock tires on some builds (e.g. Vittoria Corsa N.EXT) favor durability over suppleness
