Origin

CAAD stands for 'Cannondale Advanced Aluminum Design' — the line that for decades proved aluminium could race with carbon. The CAAD13 (launched 2019, 2020 model year) chased that argument with aero truncated-airfoil tubes, dropped seatstays and SAVE micro-suspension, deliberately mimicking the carbon SuperSix EVO silhouette. In March 2026 Cannondale reversed course with the CAAD14: it abandons the aero/dropped-stay look and returns to classic oversized round tubes and a double-diamond frame, swaps the press-fit BB30A for a mechanic-friendly 68mm BSA threaded shell, and chases pure stiffness and razor-sharp handling over wind-cheating. Both generations target serious amateur racers, club riders and budget-minded performance seekers who want carbon-level pace without carbon prices.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exciting, lively ride quality and razor-sharp, direct handling that responds instantly to inputs (both generations).
  • Outstanding value — alloy frame delivering near-carbon performance at a far lower price (CAAD14 from €2,499).
  • Explosive acceleration and stiff, efficient power transfer prized by sprinters and club racers.
  • CAAD14's threaded 68mm BSA BB and wide 32mm tyre clearance make it durable and mechanic-friendly.
  • Light for alloy: CAAD14 1 complete ~8.14 kg; raw frame 1280 g.
Weaknesses
  • Limited compliance — the stiffness-focused CAAD14 frame can feel harsh on rough roads.
  • Heavier and less refined than carbon rivals on base builds (CAAD13 105 ~9.1 kg).
  • CAAD14 drops mudguard mounts, hurting winter-training / commuting versatility that CAAD13 offered.
  • Top-spec CAAD14 1 at €7,499 is seen as steep given the alloy frame and component mix.
  • Base CAAD13 wheels are not tubeless-ready and paint/welds look utilitarian; CAAD14 lacks the latest aero cockpit/optimisation of the SuperSix EVO.
