Origin

Cannondale launched the Synapse in 2006 as its dedicated endurance road bike — softening the brand's aggressive race DNA into a comfortable, all-day platform built around SAVE micro-suspension. Across four generations it grew tire clearance and compliance, and the current Gen 4 (2022-present) reinvented the category by hard-integrating SmartSense: a frame-powered ecosystem of lights and a rear-facing Garmin Varia radar, positioning safety as the headline feature against rivals like the Trek Domane and Specialized Roubaix.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Brilliant ride quality — smooth and vibration-absorbing yet still fun and lively, the modern endurance benchmark
  • Best-in-class tire clearance (up to 48mm front / 42mm rear) makes it a true all-road bike
  • Integrated SmartSense lights + rear radar genuinely improve safety in traffic and low light
  • Confident, planted handling tuned per frame size (Proportional Response geometry)
  • Practical, low-maintenance design: BSA threaded BB, UDH, internal StashPort downtube storage
Weaknesses
  • SmartSense is hard-integrated — many riders want a clean frame option and resent the forced system
  • SmartSense battery charges separately via a proprietary Garmin connector — easy to forget before a ride
  • Extra weight from the SmartSense battery, lights and radar (~8.8kg even on a Force AXS build)
  • Alloy handlebar on otherwise premium builds feels like a cost-cut niggle
  • Lower-tier builds (e.g. Tiagra Carbon 4) offer weak value vs rivals with Ultegra/Rival AXS at similar price
