Precede (City)
Origin
Canyon is a German direct-to-consumer bike brand from Koblenz, founded in the 1980s by Roman Arnold and known for selling high-spec bikes online without dealer markups. The Precede:ON, launched around 2020-2021 alongside the Commuter:ON, was Canyon's statement urban e-bike: a fully integrated commuter with hidden cables, an internal Bosch battery, integrated lights and a bonded rear rack. The carbon CF 9 won a 2021 German Design Award and set the tone — a bike that looked more like a design object than a utility commuter. In 2022 Canyon broadened the line with an aluminium AL range to bring the concept to a lower price, and by 2024-2025 the lineup was simplified toward accessible step-through 'Comfort' models on Bosch Performance Line Sport motors.

The verdict
- Class-leading integration and clean, award-winning looks (no visible cables, integrated lights/rack/kickstand).
- Strong, refined Bosch motor (Performance Line CX on CF) with a genuinely useful real-world range.
- Low-maintenance Gates belt + Enviolo hub on top trims; comfortable, stable, confidence-inspiring ride.
- Expensive, especially the carbon CF trims (CF 9 launched around €4,999).
- Heavy (22-28kg) — awkward to carry up stairs or lift onto a rack.
- Direct-to-consumer only: no local dealer for fitting or warranty hand-holding, which matters in the Baltics.
