Origin

The E64 was Colnago's first electric road bike, unveiled in early 2019 as the storied Cambiago marque's cautious step into e-road. Founded by Ernesto Colnago in 1954, the brand built its legend on hand-finished steel and later carbon race frames ridden by the sport's greats, and it carried that reputation into the e-bike era only once it could do so without compromising the look of a 'real' Colnago. The E64 borrows its name and its silhouette from the flagship C64 — the same sloping lines and painted lug detailing — but hides a Mahle ebikemotion X35 motor in the rear hub and a slim battery in the down tube. The goal was a bike that rides and looks like a normal top-end road bike, with power that arrives only as a gentle helping hand rather than an obvious electric shove.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Genuinely light (~12 kg) and handles like a normal road bike, not a heavy e-bike
  • Subtle, natural 'tailwind' assist and near-invisible integration — passes as a regular Colnago
  • Premium Italian carbon frame with quality Ultegra / Ultegra Di2 builds and hydraulic discs
Weaknesses
  • Modest 250Wh battery and 40 Nm motor — assist fades on steep, sustained climbs and range is limited without the extra Range Extender
  • Mahle hub motor is non-removable and proprietary; out-of-warranty electronics/battery service can be costly and dealer-dependent
  • Premium price for the power on offer — you pay for the badge and the low weight, not for big torque or range

Generations

  1. E64 mechanical (2019)

    • Original, lower-cost build; two colourways (grey/black/yellow, black/white/orange).
  2. E64 Di2 (2019-2020)

    • Electronic-shift top build; same X35 motor and 250Wh battery — the difference is the groupset/spec, not the drive system.
