S2
Origin
Hiboy is a Shenzhen-based Chinese e-mobility brand that launched in 2015 focusing on hoverboards before pivoting to e-scooters in 2018-2019. The S2 was Hiboy's breakthrough product — launched on Amazon US in late 2019 at $349 just as the post-Xiaomi-M365 budget e-scooter market exploded. Hiboy used aggressive Amazon advertising, sponsored YouTube reviews, and a US-warehoused fulfillment model (rare for a Chinese brand at that time) to dominate the sub-$400 segment for three years running. By 2022 the S2 was the #1 best-selling adult e-scooter on Amazon US in its price bracket. The success was based less on technical innovation and more on price-performance fit: 13.5 kg, foldable, dual brake, 25 km/h, Amazon-fast delivery, and competent enough for 90% of first-time buyers. The S2 became the 'first scooter' for millions of users worldwide.

The verdict
- Best-in-class price-performance under €400 — no other folding 25 km/h dual-brake scooter at this price has the same Amazon reliability, warranty support, and parts availability.
- Lightweight at 13.5 kg — significantly more portable than Segway MAX G30 (18.7 kg). Easy to carry up apartment stairs, on public transport, into a car trunk.
- Dual brake (front E-ABS + rear disc) — better than single-brake budget scooters and competitive with the premium tier at half the price. Brake performance in dry conditions is good.
- Easy DIY maintenance — tubed tires are cheap and simple to replace, brake pads are €5-10, parts are available on AliExpress and Amazon. Maintenance is genuinely owner-accessible vs Segway's tubeless tire complexity.
- No major recalls or systemic safety defects through 2026 — the S2 has been remarkably trouble-free at the safety level. Compare to Segway G30's 220,000-unit recall in March 2025.
- Amazon warranty and return support — easier US/EU consumer recourse than buying from a generic Chinese AliExpress brand. Hiboy honors warranty claims through Amazon channels reliably.
- Short real-world range — 15-20 km urban commute is the genuine working number. The 27 km claim is unattainable in normal use. Heavy riders or 10+ km one-way commutes will run out of charge.
- Generic battery cells age faster — 3000-6000 km to noticeable capacity loss vs Segway G30's 8000-15000 km. The price gap is real and partly justified.
- Tubed 8.5" tires are puncture-prone — 2-4 flats per year in urban use is normal. Many owners switch to solid tires (harsh ride) or accept frequent tube replacements.
- IPX4 (vs G30's IPX5) — meaningfully less weather-resistant. Long-term wet exposure causes display fogging and intermittent throttle faults in 2-3 year-old units.
- Hill climbing is weak — 350 W peak (vs G30's 700 W peak) struggles on 15%+ gradients. Heavy riders on Baltic old-town hills (Tallinn Toompea, Vilnius Old Town) will dismount and walk on the steepest sections.
- No suspension on base S2 — cobblestone and potholes are uncomfortable. The S2 Max addresses this with spring suspension but costs €200 more and is rare in Baltic distribution.
- Hiboy app is less mature than Segway-Ninebot — no cell-level diagnostics, no theft alarm with sound, occasional pairing reliability issues. Most owners ignore the app after setup.
- Baltic distribution is Amazon-only — no major chain (Euronics, Senukai, Topo Centras) stocks the S2. Warranty service in EE/LV/LT requires Amazon return shipping back to Germany, which is slow and inconvenient.
