Origin
The Makena is Kona's 20" kids mountain bike — built to give young riders their first proper off-road experience. Kona applies the same material quality (6061 butted aluminum) and component thinking (proper V-brakes with child-fit levers, wide 2.6" tires) to kids bikes as to adult models, resulting in a bike that grows with a child's skills rather than limiting them.

- Butted aluminum frame is lighter than typical kids bikes at this price
- Wide 2.6" tires give excellent traction and stability for developing riders

- V-brakes require more lever force than hydraulic disc — fine for kids but less modulation than modern disc alternatives
- One-size-only limits fit longevity — children may outgrow it within 1-2 seasons
- No suspension fork — appropriate for the category but limits off-road confidence on rougher terrain
