765 Optimum
Origin
Look unveiled the original 765 in 2015 as the French marque's entry into the sportive/endurance segment, notable for Carboflax — a layer of natural flax fibre sandwiched between carbon at the chainstays and fork to damp road vibration, a technique borrowed from aeronautics and motorsport. The model was relaunched in December 2022 as an all-new 765 Optimum: a comfort-first endurance platform built around '3D Wave' flattened carbon stays, 34 mm tyre clearance, recessed mudguard mounts and a threaded T47 bottom bracket. Look markets it under the tagline 'the alchemy of endurance'.
Specifications
- Frame
- Full carbon endurance frame (HM/HR carbon) with '3D Wave' flattened seatstays for +15% vertical compliance; threaded T47 bottom bracket; clearance up to 34 mm tyres (700×42 on road wheels per Look). Earlier 765 (2015) generation used Carboflax — a flax-fibre layer sandwiched in carbon at chainstays/fork for vibration damping.
- Weight
- kg
- Drivetrain
- Build-dependent 2× — e.g. Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100 12-speed (R8170 shifters, R8150 derailleurs, R8100 11-34 cassette). Also offered with Shimano 105 / 105 Di2 and Ultegra R8000 mechanical.
- Brakes
- Hydraulic disc brakes, flat-mount (Shimano matched to groupset)
- Wheels
- Look R38 D carbon tubeless wheelset (38 mm depth front/rear) on Ultegra Di2 build; lower builds use alloy wheels. Frame also takes 27.5" MTB wheels (650×2.1).
The verdict
- Outstanding ride comfort and compliance over long distances (3D Wave stays + wide tyres) — praised for long-training-ride smoothness
- Stable, confidence-inspiring handling — 'a locomotive on rails', secure even at speed and on wet/damaged roads
- Genuinely practical endurance design: 34 mm tyre clearance, mudguard mounts, threaded T47 BB
- Lightweight for the category (frameset ~1,400 g; full bikes ~8.5-8.8 kg)
- Relatively high weight and slack head-tube angle make it feel less efficient on climbs
- Several stock components feel like they could be upgraded to unlock the frame's potential
- Expensive for the spec level, especially the Optimum+ builds, versus established rivals
- Mudguard mounts only accept Look's own proprietary mudguards — limited compatibility
