01
Origin
The Headlands debuted in 2021 as Marin's premium carbon gravel offering — a bike shaped by decades of Northern California mixed-surface riding. The 2025 V2 refresh added Bear Box downtube storage and UDH compatibility, drawing comparisons to bikes costing significantly more.

The verdict
+Strengths
- Oval-tube carbon frame delivers genuine vertical compliance on rough gravel
- Bear Box storage and UDH dropout add practical features rarely seen at this price
- Wide 45mm tire clearance and 650b compatibility cover real gravel range
−Weaknesses
- Lower builds (GRX 600) are specced conservatively compared to competitors
- Carbon frame commands a premium — aluminum Gestalt covers similar terrain for less
- Some riders find the relaxed geometry less lively than snappier alloy gravel bikes
