Origin

Marin Bikes was founded in 1986 in Marin County, California — the birthplace of mountain biking, where the first purpose-built off-road bikes were hacked together on Mount Tamalpais. That heritage is the whole point of the brand's youth range: rather than treating kids' bikes as toys, Marin builds them like scaled-down versions of its adult trail hardtails. The Hidden Canyon is the entry rung of that ladder, aimed at the moment a child graduates from a coaster-brake starter bike to a real geared machine with hand brakes. It has run for years as Marin's 20"-wheel kids' MTB (with a 24" companion trim), consistently praised in kids'-bike-weight comparisons for undercutting heavier big-box rivals like the Diamondback Cobra while carrying proper components.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Genuinely light for a kids' bike (~24 lb stock, lighter than most big-box rivals) — easier for a small rider to handle.
  • Real mechanical disc brakes with short-reach levers on the 20" — strong, confidence-inspiring stopping for little hands.
  • Aluminium frame + quality components make it durable, rust-resistant and an excellent hand-me-down.
Weaknesses
  • Tallish standover on the 20" frame — some smaller riders at the low end of the range struggle to straddle it.
  • Rigid fork on the 20" (fine on purpose, but no bump absorption for rougher trails).
  • Still heavy versus boutique kids' bikes (Woom, Early Rider) that cost far more but shave several pounds.

Generations

  1. 20" era (2019-2025)

    • The flagship configuration. US MSRP rose from ~$369 (2019) to ~$499 (2025); specs stayed largely stable, disc brakes throughout.

    Mechanical disc
  2. 24" companion trim

    • A size-up trim that is spec'd differently: suspension fork + rim brakes + 8-speed. Do not assume 20" specs carry over.
    Brakes
    Linear-pull rim
