01The 36V 15-25A BLDC controller is the SINGLE MOST COMMONLY REPLACED component on entry-level e-scooters globally. The mass-market entry into e-scooters via Xiaomi M365 in 2016-2019 created a massive installed base, and stock controllers fail at predictable intervals (3-5 years for typical commuter use, much less if ridden in rain).
02There is no real 'brand' in this category — Hanjie and Yongdong are component-tier OEMs, not consumer brands. The same PCB design is often sold under 5-10 different AliExpress storefronts with cosmetic relabeling. Reviews on one storefront usually apply to the underlying board, not the seller.
03The single biggest failure cause is MOSFET burnout from sustained over-current (going up a long hill at full throttle on a heavy rider, or running with a stuck-engaged throttle). Cheap boards use 3 paralleled MOSFETs per phase; better boards use 6. Count MOSFETs visible on the PCB as a rough quality indicator — 12 total vs 18 total is a meaningful difference.
04Throttle compatibility is mostly standardised at 0-5V Hall (3-wire), but not every aftermarket controller reads every throttle. Cheap thumb-throttles can drift their idle voltage above the controller's 'ignore' threshold over months of use — symptom is 'motor pulses gently at standstill'. Replace throttle before replacing controller in this case.
05Programming the controller (unlocking the EU 25 km/h speed limit, changing throttle curve, adjusting regen strength) is done via UART pads on the PCB and an open-source tool like ScooterHacking Utility or M365 Tools running on an Android phone with USB-OTG. This is legal in some jurisdictions and illegal in others — riding an unlocked scooter on public roads in EU is technically a homologation violation.
06Water ingress is the second-biggest failure mode after MOSFET burnout. Stock Xiaomi M365 controllers are minimally sealed; the deck cavity floods in heavy rain. Conformal-coated or potted aftermarket boards (extra €10-15) are dramatically more reliable in Baltic climate where the scooter sees real autumn weather.
07Capacitor death — specifically the bulk electrolytic capacitors near the battery input — is a delayed failure mode after 3-5 years. Symptom is loss of low-end torque or motor pulsing at low speed. Replaceable with a soldering iron and €2 of caps if you're handy; otherwise it's controller replacement time.
08Voltage mismatch is the single most expensive mistake a buyer makes. A 36V controller installed on a 48V scooter will explode within seconds (MOSFETs unable to handle the higher voltage stress). A 48V controller installed on a 36V scooter will run but at severely reduced performance. ALWAYS verify the voltage label on your existing controller before ordering a replacement.
