Origin

Cycles Peugeot, founded in Sochaux, France in 1882, is one of the oldest bicycle brands in the world and one of the most successful in racing history, with multiple Tour de France and world championship wins across the 20th century on legendary steel machines like the PX-10. As the road-racing era faded, the modern brand pivoted to everyday mobility. The 'VTC' (Velo Tout Chemin) is a French bicycle category term, not a race pedigree: it describes an all-road/trekking hybrid that is faster than a heavy city bike but far more comfortable and practical than a mountain bike. The Peugeot name has passed through several hands: the European licence went to Cycleurope (owned by Sweden's Grimaldi Industri) from the 1990s, and in October 2024 Cycleurope sold its French subsidiary and the Peugeot Cycles licence to Rebirth Holding, a French electric-mobility firm. Today's VTC bikes carry the heritage badge on aluminium frames built for commuting and leisure across the whole Trekking line-up.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Fully equipped from the factory (rack, mudguards, dynamo lights, kickstand) — genuinely ready to commute, no add-ons needed
  • Reliable, easy-to-service Shimano drivetrains and a durable aluminium 6061-T6 frame
  • Strong value and a trusted heritage badge; the range spans ~€500 (T03/T02) to ~€1,100+ (T01 D9 hydraulic disc)
Weaknesses
  • 'VTC' is a family name, not one bike — specs and quality swing hugely between the cheap V-brake T02/T03 and the disc-equipped T01
  • Entry trims use basic 3x7 Tourney gearing, cheap suspension forks (mostly cosmetic travel) and rim brakes that fade in the wet
  • On the heavier side (~15.5 kg equipped) and not aimed at sporty/fast riders
