Turbo Como

Origin

The Turbo Como is Specialized's argument that an e-bike doesn't have to look like an e-bike — and doesn't have to demand the rider lean forward. Launched in 2016 alongside the Turbo Vado (its sportier flat-bar sibling), the Como was the first Specialized e-bike built explicitly around a relaxed, upright, step-through-friendly riding position. It's the bike Specialized sells to riders who want to keep cycling into their 60s and 70s, to parents using e-bikes for school runs, to commuters who arrive at the office not sweating. Current generation Como models run Specialized's own Turbo Full Power 2.0 motor (90Nm, 565Wh or 710Wh batteries) made in partnership with Brose, with a low-step frame, swept-back handlebars, integrated lighting, fenders, rack, and either Shimano derailleur drivetrains or — on the IGH builds — an internally geared Enviolo continuously variable hub paired with a Gates Carbon Drive belt. There is no chain to clean, no gears to misshift, and the throttle of an effortless commute.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Extremely smooth and natural motor assistance — amplifies effort up to 4x
  • IGH variants offer maintenance-free belt drive with stepless shifting
  • Industry-leading comfort: upright position, suspension seatpost, wide tires, ergonomic grips
  • Fully equipped from factory — fenders, lights, rack, bell, reflective paint
  • Excellent range: up to 145 km in eco mode (710Wh battery)
  • Integrated anti-theft system via app (motor lock, PIN, motion alarm)
  • Step-through frame accessible for all riders and use cases
  • Rear rack compatible with child seats (MIK HD, 27kg capacity)
Weaknesses
  • Heavy: 28-29 kg for full-power models, limits portability
  • Custom integrated stem/handlebar cannot be swapped or adjusted
  • Como SL steerer tube recall — affects all SL models, stop-ride
  • Belt guard recall on IGH models — clothing entanglement risk
  • 70Nm Como 4.0 motor reported as lacking power by some riders (vs 90Nm on 5.0 IGH)
  • Enviolo IGH shifting can feel sticky, requires pause before shifts

Buyer’s notes

01
CHECK RECALL STATUS before buying any used Como. SL models have stop-ride notice (steerer tube). IGH models 2021-2024 need belt guard replacement.
02
Como 4.0 (70Nm) vs 5.0 IGH (90Nm) is a significant motor difference. If you ride hills regularly or weigh over 85kg, the 90Nm 5.0 IGH is worth the €1,900 premium.
03
IGH belt drive variants are nearly maintenance-free but significantly more expensive. For flat city riding, the standard Como 4.0 with chain is perfectly adequate.
04
Test ride before buying: the fixed handlebar/stem combo cannot be adjusted. Ensure the riding position suits you.
05
Avoid buying used Como SL models — all subject to stop-ride recall. Even with fork replacement, resale value is significantly impacted.
06
Como's anti-theft system (Turbo System Lock via app) is a genuine deterrent but not a replacement for a physical lock. Use both.
