Origin

Émonda — French verb 'émonder' meaning 'to prune' or 'to trim'. The name signals the product philosophy: every gram trimmed off the frame. Trek used French naming for road performance lines (Émonda, Madone — named after Col de la Madone, a famous training climb on French/Italian Riviera). The Émonda was Trek's answer to the Specialized Tarmac and Cannondale SuperSix EVO in the lightweight climbing road category. Trek's Women's-Specific Design (WSD) program ran roughly 2000-2015. WSD bikes had genuinely women's-specific geometry (shorter top tubes, taller head tubes) plus women's contact points. Around 2016 Trek switched to the 'Women's' suffix — same frames as unisex on most sizes, only contact points + paint differing. 01When Trek launched the Émonda SLR in June 2014, the 56cm frame weighed 690 grams painted — at that moment the lightest production road frame ever sold. The SLR 9 WSD inherited the same frame; smaller WSD sizes were lighter still.
02Trek killed the WSD (Women's-Specific Design) acronym in 2016, switching to the simpler 'Women's' suffix. By 2020 even that suffix was gone — Émonda became unisex. The Émonda Women's lived through Trek's whole gender-marketing identity crisis.
03'Émonda' is French for 'to prune / to trim'. Trek named the bike after its design philosophy: every gram pruned away.
04Émonda uses an integrated 'Ride Tuned' carbon seatmast — the seat tube IS the seatpost, with only a small cap clamping a saddle. Looks elegant and saves grams; if cut too short, the frame is permanently shorter for any future taller rider.
05The MY2015 Émonda SLR 9 WSD with Dura-Ace Di2 and Aeolus 3 tubular wheels weighed approximately 6.0-6.2 kg in size 50-52 — below the UCI 6.8 kg minimum for racing. Riders had to add ballast to comply.
06All Émonda Women's models from 2015-2019 came with the Bontrager Ajna saddle — Trek's women-specific saddle with wider sit-bone support and slightly shorter nose. It became Trek's signature women's contact point and remains as an option on unisex bikes today.
07The Émonda Women's was killed twice: first in 2020 when the Women's suffix was retired, second in 2024 when the entire Émonda platform was absorbed into the Gen 8 Madone. A model that just kept getting cancelled.
