Origin

The Rail is Trek's full-power, long-travel electric mountain bike — built for enduro-style riding where motor assistance lets the rider climb fast and descend hard. The 2025 Rail+ Gen 5 generation marks the platform's biggest revision since launch: travel jumped to 160mm front and rear (previously 150/150), the new Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 motor delivers 85Nm torque and 600W peak power, and a fresh 800Wh PowerTube battery offers more range than the previous 750Wh unit while weighing almost half a kilo less thanks to newer-generation cells. Trek added a second flip-chip to the rear triangle for adjustable geometry, refined the ABP (Active Braking Pivot) suspension layout for quieter chainslap and better small-bump compliance, and routed cables internally through the headset. The lineup mixes OCLV Mountain Carbon (Rail+ 8/9.7/9.8/9.9) and aluminium (Rail+ 5/8) frames. Prices for 2025-2026 span roughly €5,499 for the aluminium Rail+ 5 to about €11,999 for the Rail+ 9.8 GX AXS T-Type Gen 5. It competes directly with the Specialized Turbo Levo, Canyon Spectral:ON, and Santa Cruz Bullit.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Enduro-level handling — rides like a real mountain bike, not an e-bike with trail pretensions
  • Bosch CX delivers reliable, powerful, smooth assistance
  • 800Wh + PowerMore = industry-leading range
  • RIB system — removable battery without compromising aesthetics
  • Highly adjustable geometry (Mino Link + headset + leverage rate)
Weaknesses
  • Weight (24–25+ kg) substantial even for e-MTB
  • Cable rattling inside frame on rough terrain (Gen 5)
  • Entry at €4,999 aluminum, carbon from €5,999
  • Bosch motor cutout on rough terrain reported on some Gen 3 units

Buyer’s notes

01
Gen 5 Rail+ (2025+) is a big leap — 800Wh, 160mm, RIB 2.0, quieter motor. If buying new, go Gen 5.
02
Used Gen 1-2: check Bosch Smart System. Gen 1-2 use older Non-Smart — no app, fewer features, cannot be updated.
03
Rail+ 5 (€4,999, aluminum) shares identical 800Wh battery and Bosch CX motor with top carbon models — motor experience is the same, only frame and components differ.
04
Baltic riders: Rail+ is fully EU-compliant pedelec. No registration needed. BUT Lithuania requires helmet for all e-bike users since Jan 2026.
05
Battery rattle fix: ensure lock is properly engaged, add foam dampening if noise persists.
06
Budget for Bosch CX service — periodic maintenance needed (every 10,000+ km or annually). Parts and labor not cheap.
07
Want enduro e-MTB but lighter? Trek Fuel EXe (TQ motor, ~18kg) is fundamentally different — lighter but less power. Rail+ is for max power and range.
08
PowerMore 250 range extender (Gen 5 only) adds 250Wh for ~€300-400 — cost-effective way to get 1050Wh for big days.
