Origin

The Turbowheel Lightning was, for several years, the answer to 'what's the best performance scooter under €2000?' Distributed by eWheels in the US and grey-imported across the EU, the Lightning delivered dual 1000W motors, a 957 Wh (later 1260 Wh) battery, hybrid road/off-road tires and a verified ~70 km/h top speed at a price that consistently undercut Dualtron's entry-level performance line. It was the scooter that taught a generation of riders that dual-motor performance didn't have to mean a €3000 outlay. Often praised in reviews as 'punching above its weight,' the Lightning's place in the market was ultimately eaten by the next generation of Kaabo Mantis Pro and NAMI Burn-e variants, and Turbowheel quietly retired the line by 2023. Used Lightnings remain a popular entry into the performance segment.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Dual 1000 W motors deliver genuine performance — strong acceleration, 40 mph top speed and ~45% claimed hill-climb, rare in its price tier
  • Excellent suspension (front torsion bar + rear adjustable dampeners) paired with wide 10-inch pneumatic tires gives a smooth, stable ride on rough surfaces
  • Outstanding price-to-performance — consistently undercut Dualtron-class scooters while offering comparable speed and power
  • Dual charging ports allow fast ~4-hour recharge despite the large 957 Wh battery
  • Three selectable speed modes plus single-motor and Eco options make the power manageable for less experienced riders
Weaknesses
  • Heavy at 77 lb / 35 kg — too bulky to carry upstairs or commute with daily
  • Weak headlight and taillight — poor visibility for night riding
  • Non-adjustable stem height, uncomfortable for very short or tall riders
  • No IP water-resistance rating — not safe for wet conditions
  • Reported reliability niggles: post-trail squeaking, rigid grips/brake pads, occasional tire flats, sensitive throttle; discontinued so no current warranty/support
