Origin
The E-Substance was Vitus's answer to the growing demand for electric gravel bikes that don't sacrifice the feel of riding a normal bike. By using Fazua's Evation system — at the time the lightest and most compact integrated motor available — the E-Substance retained drop-bar ergonomics, narrow tube shapes, and a weight that permitted unassisted riding without penalty. The motor and battery are fully removable as a single unit.

The verdict
+Strengths
- Fazua system is the lightest integrated motor option at launch — minimal weight penalty
- Removable motor/battery unit is genuinely practical for training day conversion
- Carbon build approaches normal gravel bike weight — unusual for any electric model
−Weaknesses
- 252Wh battery provides limited range vs larger-battery eMTB systems — not suitable for multi-day loaded touring with motor on constantly
- 55Nm torque is lower than dedicated eMTB motors — adequate for gravel gradients, not for steep MTB climbs
- Fazua ecosystem discontinued in 2023, raising long-term parts availability concern
