Origin

The Sender AL was Canyon's aluminium World Cup downhill bike, sold in parallel with the carbon Sender CF from the platform's 2014 launch through roughly 2020. Built around 200 mm of dual-crown-forked front travel and 200 mm of rear, with a 63-degree head angle and the same race geometry as the carbon version, the AL existed specifically to put Canyon Factory Racing-flavoured DH performance in reach of privateer downhill racers, bike-park residents, and shuttle riders who didn't want to risk a €5,000 carbon frame on rock gardens. Final-generation Sender AL 6.0 trim ran a SRAM GX DH 1×7 drivetrain, SRAM Code R brakes, a RockShox BoXXer Select fork and Super Deluxe coil shock, and sat around €2,999–3,399. When Canyon redesigned the Sender into a high-pivot carbon-only chassis around 2020–2021, the brand dropped the AL version and consolidated the entire DH platform around the carbon Sender CFR. The Sender AL remains popular on the second-hand market as a privateer DH chassis.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptional value — full World-Cup DH geometry and reliable component spec at an entry-level price (AL 6.0 ~$2,999–3,399)
  • Genuine race-ready geometry (63° head angle, adjustable cups); reviewers said they'd 'race it without upgrading anything'
  • Composed and fast in rough terrain, stable in the air and in corners
  • Playful and maneuverable on bike-park jumps and flow trails (AL build); current CFR is exceptionally stable and fast at speed
  • Solid, durable aluminium chassis well-suited to privateer racers and shuttle/park abuse
Weaknesses
  • Dedicated 27.5" DH-only platform (AL) — single-use bike, no versatility off the downhill track
  • Limited frame adjustability on the AL beyond the eccentric head-angle cups
  • Acros headset on the AL prone to creaking; some service quirks
  • Direct-to-consumer model means no dealer network for setup/warranty support — daunting for first-time DH buyers
  • Now discontinued and dated vs the current high-pivot CFR; current CFR is heavy (~17.9 kg) and less playful in slow, tight sections with a low BB that can snag
