CanyonSpectral 29

Origin
When Canyon released the Spectral 29, it blurred the lines between a trail bike and an enduro bike. With 160mm up front and a 64-degree head angle, it was more aggressive than the previous generation, catering to riders who wanted Strive-like descending capabilities without the complex Shapeshifter tech. Gen 1 (2020-2023): The original leap of the Spectral platform to 29-inch wheels, featuring 150mm rear / 160mm front travel.

The verdict
+Strengths
- Class-leading value: direct-to-consumer pricing puts XT/Fox-36 builds well below comparably-specced bikes from other brands.
- Triple Phase Horst-link rear suspension is praised as 'some of the best in the business' — supple off the top, supportive mid-stroke, progressive at the end.
- Modern, confidence-inspiring geometry (64° head angle, generous reach, 437 mm chainstays) makes it effortless and stable on steep, rough descents.
- 160/150 mm travel with a Fox 36 makes it noticeably more capable than a typical trail bike, edging into light-enduro territory.
- Thoughtful frame details: molded protection, replaceable inserts, internal routing and the adjustable flip-chip.
−Weaknesses
- 460 mm seat tube is on the long side, limiting how much dropper travel taller riders can fit — a recurring critique.
- Rear suspension is sensitive to shock setup: too much pressure feels harsh, too little gives traction but noticeable pedal bob.
- Without the climb-switch engaged the bike bobs under power, so climbing efficiency relies on using the platform.
- On lower/mid builds the parts package (e.g. GX Eagle, G2 brakes, base-damper fork) lacks the refinement of higher-tier components at the price.
- Buy-online-only model: no test rides, self-assembly required, and warranty/fit handled remotely.
