Origin

Cube (Pending System GmbH) was founded in 1993 in Waldershof, Bavaria, by Marcus Puerner, starting in a corner of his father's furniture factory. Over three decades it grew into one of Europe's largest bike manufacturers, still headquartered and building in Germany. The Acid name is one of Cube's long-running hardtail families, and the kids' Acid line (Acid 200, 240, 260) applies the same design language and component logic to smaller riders. The '200' denotes the 20-inch wheel size in Cube's naming convention (240 = 24-inch, 260 = 26-inch), so a family can step a child up wheel-size by wheel-size while keeping a familiar bike.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Genuinely light and well-built aluminium frame for the price — feels like a real MTB, not a heavy toy.
  • Simple, durable Shimano 7-speed twist-shift drivetrain that small hands can manage, with a 34T bailout climbing gear.
  • Current Disc build's Shimano hydraulic brakes give confident, weather-proof stopping unusual on a kids' bike.
Weaknesses
  • At ~9.1-9.5 kg it is not the lightest 20-inch bike out there; very small or lightweight kids may find it a handful for jumps.
  • Rigid fork only — no suspension, so rough trails are transmitted straight through (fine for the intended use, but not a downhill machine).
  • Entry-level Tourney-class drivetrain and budget tyres are the obvious cost-saving; fine but not premium.

Generations

  1. Early era (~2018-2020)

    • Rim-brake generation. 'SL' trim added lighter wheels. Reliable but heavier stopping in the wet.
    Brakes
    Alloy V-brake + Powermodulator
  2. Disc era (~2021-2026)

    • Mainstream build switched to hydraulic disc brakes — the key reason to prefer a newer used unit for wet/muddy Baltic conditions.
    Brakes
    Shimano BR-MT200 hydraulic disc 160/160
