Lanao Advanced

Origin

Ghost was founded in 1993 in Waldsassen, Bavaria (Germany) by Uwe Kalliwoda and Klaus Möhwald, and grew into one of the better-known value-focused German MTB brands, later part of the Accell Group. The Lanao is Ghost's long-running women's hardtail platform: a female-specific take on their Kato/Lanao cross-country geometry, built around a steeply sloping top tube for a low standover and a riding position tuned between sporty and comfortable. Ghost showed women-specific Lanao models (including early e-MTB versions) as far back as Eurobike 2016. Within that line the 'Advanced' trim has consistently been the sensible upper-mid pick: an air fork with lockout and Shimano hydraulic brakes at a price that undercuts the flagship Lanao Pro.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Strong value for money — air fork with lockout plus hydraulic discs at a mid price
  • Women's-specific low-standover geometry is confidence-inspiring and easy to mount
  • Playful, capable handling (short chainstays, moderate reach) that punches above its price on descents
Weaknesses
  • Entry-to-mid components (Alivio/Deore/Cues, MT200 brakes) — fine but not high-end
  • Heavier alloy build with no dropper post from factory
  • 27.5" wheels and 100 mm travel limit it to XC/light trail, not aggressive terrain

Generations

  1. Alivio era (to ~2021)

    • Triple front, simplest of the three eras; heavier drivetrain.
  2. Deore era (2022-2023)

    • Cleaner 2x10, widest gear range (~529%); well-reviewed value sweet spot.
  3. Cues era (2024-2025)

    • Newest Shimano unified group; better parts availability going forward, slightly narrower range than Deore.
