Keo Blade Carbon
Origin
LOOK is a French company from Nevers that effectively invented the modern clipless road pedal: in 1984 it adapted its ski-binding know-how into the PP65, and Bernard Hinault won the 1985 Tour de France on LOOK clipless pedals — a moment that changed road cycling forever. The Keo family arrived in 2004 as a lighter, narrower evolution of the original three-hole system. In 2011 LOOK introduced the Keo Blade, whose defining idea was to throw out the traditional steel retention spring entirely and replace it with a pre-tensioned carbon leaf spring — the 'blade'. This let LOOK cut weight, enlarge the platform, and offer swappable blades for different release tensions. The Keo Blade Carbon and its lighter Carbon/Ti and Ceramic Ti siblings have been ridden in the professional peloton by riders such as Alberto Contador, Peter Sagan and Tadej Pogačar.
The verdict
- Very light for a full-featured road pedal (Carbon ~220 g/pair; Carbon Ti ~186-190 g/pair)
- Large 705 mm² / 64 mm platform gives secure, stable footing with minimal hot spots
- Swappable blade tensions (8/12/16 Nm) let you tune engagement/release; excellent cleat wear life
- Some testers report side-to-side cleat rocking / squeak under power on the standard Carbon
- Premium and Ti/Ceramic trims get expensive fast for a modest real-world weight saving
- Carbon blade is a wear/impact part — a cracked or fatigued blade must be replaced, not adjusted
Generations
Standard Carbon
- Best value; near-full performance at a fraction of the Ti price.
Ceramic
- Ceramic bearings for lower friction; marginal real gain for most riders.
Carbon Ti / Ceramic Ti
- Lightest, priciest; the ~30 g/pair saving over standard Carbon is the main draw for weight-weenies.
