Origin

The Matts J is Merida's kids mountain bike line, designed around the principle that children's bikes should be properly engineered rather than cheapened. The standout feature is the Tektro hydraulic disc brake system — a component specification that gives children safe, modulated stopping power even with smaller hands that struggle to generate cable-pull force. The SR Suntour fork is tuned for lighter riders, and the Shimano drivetrain provides reliable gear changes for developing riders.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Hydraulic disc brakes provide genuine stopping power manageable by children's smaller hands
  • SR Suntour fork tuned for light riders actually absorbs bumps — unlike adult-spec forks on budget kids bikes
  • Shimano drivetrain shifts reliably even with the rough handling kids give their bikes
Weaknesses
  • Heavier than balance/run bikes or single-speed kids bikes — first-time young riders may find it heavy
  • Hydraulic disc brakes require occasional professional bleeding — more maintenance than mechanical
  • Limited wheel size options (20" and 24") — riders may outgrow each size within a couple of years
