Matts J 24

01

Origin

The Matts J 24 is the 24-inch wheel step-up in Merida's junior MTB range — bridging the gap between the 20" starter bike and full adult mountain bikes. At 24 inches, the bike is sized for children who have outgrown the 20" model but are not yet tall enough for adult 26" or 27.5" bikes. The 8-speed drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes continue the Matts J philosophy: real components for developing riders.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Hydraulic disc brakes and wide 2.35" tyres give genuine trail capability to a youth bike
  • 8-speed drivetrain provides smooth gear progression appropriate for the age group's developing coordination
  • Proper component specification from Shimano and Tektro means the bike will last through growth stages without parts failure
Weaknesses
  • Rigid fork on the 24+ variant means more vibration transmission on rough trails than the suspension-forked 20" model
  • 24" wheel standard limits second-hand tyre and rim availability compared to 26" or 27.5"
  • Children will likely outgrow the bike within 2–3 years given the 129–137 cm height window
