Domane+ AL

Origin

The Domane+ AL was introduced in 2022 as the affordable, aluminum entry point into Trek's electric road lineup. Where the carbon Domane+ SLR uses an expensive mid-drive, the AL relies on a Hyena HyDrive rear hub motor with a torque sensor — a simpler, lighter, and cheaper architecture that keeps the bike well under three thousand euro. The 250 Wh battery is integrated into the downtube and an optional 250 Wh range extender effectively doubles range. The geometry mirrors the analog Domane AL endurance frame, with relaxed angles, clearance for 35 mm tires, and Trek's IsoZone vibration-damping handlebar. The whole bike weighs around 14 kg, low for a hub-drive e-road, and rides like a normal road bike when the motor is off.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • One of the lightest e-road bikes in its class (~14 kg) — rides like a normal road bike when the motor is off
  • Torque-sensor hub motor feathers power in naturally, no throttle-like surge
  • Confident, stable descending thanks to the low center of mass from the downtube battery
  • Mechanical Shimano 105 R7000 11-speed drivetrain with hydraulic disc brakes at an accessible price
  • Optional 250 Wh Range Extender doubles total capacity to 500 Wh without permanent weight penalty
Weaknesses
  • Noticeable pedaling drag/friction with motor off (bearing seals + hub resistance) — heavier feel than analog Domane AL
  • Hub motor is a weak climber compared with mid-drive systems; chosen for low weight, not torque
  • Real-world range falls well short of the 55 mi Eco claim — owners report ~35 mi Eco, ~24 mi in higher modes
  • Only three assist modes with large jumps in power between them, limiting fine control
  • Rear hub motor complicates wheel removal and tire/flat repair vs a standard wheel

Who it’s for

First-time e-road buyer or returning cyclist on a budget who wants endurance-road geometry, mechanical Shimano 105, and the option to ride unpowered without penalty.
