Origin

The Domane+ SLR launched in 2023 as Trek's flagship lightweight electric road bike, built around the brand new TQ HPR50 motor — a German-engineered Harmonic Pin Ring transmission that hides inside the bottom bracket and delivers near-silent assist. Trek partnered with TQ to escape the visual and weight penalty of conventional mid-drives, and the result is an e-road bike that looks almost indistinguishable from the analog Domane SLR. The 800 Series OCLV Carbon frame carries Trek's rear IsoSpeed decoupler — endurance comfort tech born from Paris-Roubaix — so the bike doubles as a long-distance machine on rough pavement and light gravel up to 40 mm tires. A compact 360 Wh battery slips into a slim downtube and an optional 160 Wh range extender extends autonomy for all-day rides.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptionally light for a full-power e-road bike (~11.8-12 kg) — easy to carry, rack and pedal unassisted
  • TQ HPR50 motor is near-silent and feels natural, with strong support at high cadence
  • Looks almost identical to the analog Domane — stealthy integration, clean internal routing
  • Rear IsoSpeed decoupler delivers real endurance comfort on rough pavement
  • Full electronic groupset runs off the main bike battery (no separate Di2/AXS battery to charge)
Weaknesses
  • Very expensive — top builds reach ~€12,999
  • Battery is semi-permanently fixed in the downtube; cannot be removed for indoor charging
  • Proprietary flat-back seatpost blocks aftermarket/suspension seatpost upgrades
  • Lower motor power and battery capacity than full-fat e-bikes — modest assist on steep climbs vs Bosch/Specialized SL
  • High-step frame only; no low-standover option, and ships without pedals or kickstand mounts
