Origin

2001. The Genius began as Scott's do-it-all trail weapon — designed from the Alps outward. Born for big mountain terrain where riders need to climb efficiently and descend confidently, the Genius predates the modern 'trail bike' category and helped define it.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptionally light for 150mm trail bike — 12.8kg at top spec is benchmark territory
  • Three-mode NUDE shock is genuinely functional: Traction Control mode raises BB, stiffens damping, improves climbing posture dynamically
  • Gen 6 geometry is finally modern: 64–65° HTA, 460mm reach (MD), 77° STA
  • Adjustable head angle (±0.5° via cups, 64/64.5/65°) allows tuning without tools
  • All frame levels (alloy, hybrid, carbon) share identical geometry, kinematics, and integration features
  • Clean, integrated aesthetic from IST shock hiding — among the best-looking trail bikes available
  • Fox 36 160mm fork matched to 150mm rear is well-balanced for trail/AM riding
Weaknesses
  • Internal shock complicates tuning and service compared to externally-mounted shocks
  • Cables routed through headset — bearing swaps and cup changes require cable unplugging
  • Fixed 440mm chainstay across all sizes — no proportional geometry; small riders may find rear end feels long
  • 29" only in Gen 6 — eliminates mullet option that was available in Gen 5
  • TwinLoc on Genius ST operates shock only (not fork) — less integrated than on Spark/Genius 900
  • Top pricing ($11,999) steep for a non-electronic-suspension bike
  • Genius ST described as a 'jack of all trades, master of none' — very capable but not the best pure descender at price
