KickScooter D18E
Origin
The D-series is Segway-Ninebot's answer to the 'good enough, cheap enough' commuter question. After Ninebot (founded in Beijing in 2012) acquired the original Segway in 2015, it became the world's dominant kick-scooter maker, best known for the ES and MAX families. The D-series arrived in 2021 as a cleaner, more affordable step below the MAX: three near-identical-looking scooters — D18E, D28E, D38E — distinguished mainly by battery size and the range baked into the name (18, 28 and 38 km). The D18E sits at the bottom of that ladder: the smallest battery, the lightest frame, and the friendliest price. It was never meant to chase range records; it was built to be the cheapest way into a Segway-badged, 10-inch-tyred, IPX5-rated scooter for genuinely short city hops.

- Brakes
- Front electronic (E-ABS regen) + rear drum brake
The verdict
- Light (14.8 kg) and folds one-handed — easy to carry indoors, onto a bus, or up stairs
- 10-inch pneumatic tyres give real ride comfort on cobbles and rough tarmac despite no suspension
- IPX5 sealing, colour display and Segway build quality at a genuine budget price
- Short 18 km claimed range (realistically ~12-14 km) — a last-mile tool, not a commuter for longer trips
- Weak 250W motor and 10% climb limit make it struggle on real hills and with heavier riders
- Rear drum brake and front regen only — adequate but not confidence-inspiring in emergency stops or wet
Generations
D18E
- Entry trim: lightest (14.8 kg), cheapest, weakest. Short hops only.
D28E
- The sweet-spot middle: meaningfully more range and payload for a small price step. Best all-round pick.
D38E
- Top trim: real commuter range and hill ability, heavier and pricier.
